The New Inn Branding Project

The New Inn - Westfield (Branding)
The New Inn is a small pub located in a small village called Westfield (Nr Hastings). The pub has been apart of the village for many years, and has been in the hands of many owners; currently it is owned by Mr Edwards and his family.

I wanted to create a branding identity for this amazing little pub, that has been apart of my community since before i was born.
Angela Wright is a psychologist, who spent 20+ years researching how different tints, tones, and shades, of colour effect how people perceive them. Form this research, Wright produced 4 different colour groups: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.

Group 1: Spring, is usually used for brands aiming for a younger audience, such as toy manufacturers and social media companies, so we can dismiss this group instantly.

Group 2: Summer, is all about timelessness, and luxury. I’m not sure how long the pub has been in the village for, but I imagine it has been a good few decades, the building is at the centre of the village, and has always been know as THE Pub; whenever someone says they're going to the pub, we all know they mean The New Inn. Mix that with the modern interior, and you’ve got yourself a beautiful timeless pub.

Group 3: Autumn, mostly used for branding, it is bold, it’s strong, and usually used for companies that have a proud heritage, which is why it was more difficult to put to one side than group 1. As I’ve just said, the pub has been part of the village for YEARS. But, the Cobalt Blue that The New Inn use on their sign doesn’t fit into this group, so we then dismiss this group too.

Group 4: Winter, very modern, sophisticated, bold, beautiful set of colours.

So that leaves us with 2 groups to choose from, either group 2, or group 4.
Looking at the mood board above, of images I collected of The New Inn, you can see that the interior very toned down, with quite earth tones, and has a modern rustic feel. This means that Angela Wright’s 4th colour group wouldn’t fit with the mood of the interior of the pub, where as group 2 would compliment it.

Using Angela Wright’s Colour Group 2, and the Cobalt blue you already use, these are the kinds of colour combinations we’re looking at:
From the research I conducted, these are the colours I chose to use for The New Inn's branding. They work well together, and they fit with Angela Wright's colour group 2, making them timeless, sophisticated, and elegant, whilst also fitting in beautifully with the interior design of the pub.
Typography is really important, getting it right can make your work a success, whilst getting it wrong can cause it to be a complete failure. Which is why finding the right typeface pairing is so important.
The New Inn uses Times New Roman as their main typeface, so I researched different typefaces that pair well with Times New Roman, and these were the most common to pairings appear.

Helvetica Neue is a beautiful typeface, which has been described as timeless, which is the mood I am aiming for.

Then there is Ariel, which is used a lot, making it a very generic typeface. Ariel can be paired with a number of different typefaces, but it only has a few options in terms of font weight, this is the lightest font weight available. Ariel would pair well with Times New Roman if i set Times New Roman on a heavier font weight, however due to The New Inn using a regular font weight, so i didn't want to make the weight any heavier.

Lastly, Avenir. Avenir is fairly recently developed, it’s modern, beautiful, everything i was looking for; however, due to the futuristic elements of the typeface, Avenir doesn't have that timeless feel that the colour scheme has. Therefore, I’m confident that Helvetica Neue is the perfect typeface pairing for The New Inn band.

Which leads us to having this style guide seen below:
#FAFAFA would be used for the backgrounds, #A1B4C6 would be used for detailing, Icons, and anything that isn’t text, which leaves #2B2A4B as the font colour.
The above images are of the Take Away Menu and Table Number designs i created, using the Style Guide i created for The New Inn.

The menu has a very rustic feel to it, especially when placed upon this wooden table. It is also clear and easy to read. I added this beautiful Gestalt style steam symbol, to the right hand side, as it fills in the white space without over crowding the design.

The Table number has the same style as the menu, however looks modern, due to its modern surroundings. Thus demonstrating how this design is both modern and rustic, just like The New Inn.
Thank you for taking the time to look through my project.
